That’s Live Image Transmission!
Live Image Transmission (LIT) is a workflow for direct image transfer from a Canon camera for image editing. To do this, you use mobile Internet and two freely accessible hardware components: A wireless file transmitter (Canon WFT-E2/4) and a mobile hotspot (also UMTS or a 3G router). Software is not needed, which provides the system with great reliability, stability and user-friendliness. The tried and tested file-transfer-protocol (FTP) is utilized for data transfer. The system confirms a successful transfer of a JPEG file; the image receives a marking. This way, the photographer is always informed about the status of the transferred photos. Weiterlesen

The Future of Press Photography is Called ‘Live Image Transmission’! And LIT already works outstandingly!
In the meantime, image transmission directly from the camera is no longer just sorcery. Instead, it is a useful tool for every photographer with the proper hardware configuration and operating in an area with UMTS coverage. Live Image Transmission is particularly easily to set up for Canon photographers: You do not need any software, just a Canon Wireless File Transmitter (WFT) and a mobile hotspot (3G WiFi router). In communication with the mobile hotspot, WFT transmits the image data directly from a Canon EOS-1D/1Ds/5D/7D by WLAN to the mobile hotspot and from this via the cell phone data network (3G and new 4G) to the Web. Under normal circumstances, a simple FTP server reliably receives the JPG images only 30 to 60 seconds later. Weiterlesen

Live Image Editing: Images to be edited in the “Cloud” resulting in speed, efficiency and flexibility.
Live Image Transmission, is a modern and super fast workflow for the live transmission of images, directly from the DSLR-camera, utilizing the cellphone data network. Current press images may be available to the editorial team within approximately 30 seconds after taking the shot. Live Image Transmission can only be utilized to its fullest potential when the editorial team's work processes are optimized as well. Live image editing in the cloud might be a workflow, which could very quickly bring the live photos online. The processing, presentation and delivery of the photos should take place on a cloud server. A live image editor should crop the automatically optimized images via Internet and add the caption. Following image optimization and automatic captioning, as desired, a live photo could immediately be available for download with a basic image caption in the online image database, (30-60 seconds after taking the shot), for example, for impatient online editorial teams. Other customers awaiting the photos with less urgency may decide for themselves whether they want to download an image marked red, yellow or green. Red: Live photo, optimized, without crop, only with a basic caption. A yellow point for the online thumbnail indicates: Picture cropped, optimized, text provided (with names). Green would mean: Image fully optimized, cropped and provided with text. Whereas press images may be directly transmitted from the camera to the cloud image server, the necessary subsequent steps may also be handled within the cloud. The image editor may perform his duties at home. Even the photographer himself could process his images on a pad during a quiet moment. Live Image Transmission (LIT) changes the photographers' approach and upgrades the image editors' work. Soon, swiss-image.ch will complete four years with the new live workflow, having utilized the experiences gathered from hundreds of test days in its further development. From a technological perspective, the LIT system, consisting of a Wireless File Transmitter (Canon WFT-E…) and a mobile hotspot (WiFi, 3G router), is almost perfect. Only higher wireless data standards (LTE – next year also available in Switzerland) and upgraded operation of the Canon DSLR cameras might improve this purely hardware-based configuration. Aside from this, only direct integration of 3G/4G cell phone wireless data technology in the camera or in the wireless file transmitter would bring a true leap forward in photography's live future. Why iPhone 4 and Android Smartphones are merely a second choice for image transmission!
Current smartphones, such as the Samsung Galaxy S2 or the iPhone 4, are powerful and chic versatile devices, that even allow you to make phone calls. They can also be deployed for image data transmission directly from a DSLR camera. For both superb cellphones boast the practical personal hotspot function. In other words, it is the function for which mobile hotspots or 3G-routers have been exclusively designed. Yet, the following article describes why smartphones are not the best choice for Live Image Transmission.
UPDATE. Tantalizing opportunities for photographers who want to work with Live Image Transmission: Instead of having to purchase a new mobile hotspot (approx. $ 177 to $ 240) and, without any additional investment, the photographer's own iPhone 4 may be utilized as an UMTS router. We tried it out. Configuring an Apple cell phone is fairly straightforward. The preset SSID (identification of the access point) may be copied or assigned as desired. We recommend short SSIDs, since the sequence must also be entered in the camera settings of a Canon EOS-1D Mk-4 (or Ds, 5D, 7D) by means of a wheel and two thumbs. The enforced access key may satisfy the need for security shared by many iPhone 4 users. However, entering the key sequence requires much thumb activity for a photographer. That is why we usually select only a simple authentication and an easy access key, often none at all. For in stressful situations, even seasoned live photographers are practically unable to enter complex keys in the camera. Hence, even beginning photographers may experience their debut of live photography with an open mobile hotspot.
The Android cell phone has a much simpler input for required parameters. The Android cell phone makes it possible to completely refrain from using WiFi data connection security features. Weiterlesen

Mobile 3G hotspot allows you to upload pictures from your camera. When will Canon upgrade to EOS-1D Mk-IV with WFT-3G?
No laptop, no pocket PC - and yet images can still be transmitted from any Canon professional digital camera via FTP. A new, ultra-mobile and durable hotspot using a 3G modem complements the Canon EOS cameras with screw-on WLAN module, turning them into "live cameras." Pictures can be sent to the newsroom with a time lag ranging from mere seconds to minutes, where they can be processed for the Internet or for printing. You might say this is a high-end form of MMS, only with perfect picture quality and a JPEG size of up to 6 MB. A prerequisite for this most recent alternative in the area of ultra-mobile image transfer is the availability of the mobile communications data technologies UMTS, HSDPA or HSUPA.
